According to a report, Google has enabled the ability to transfer eSIMs across Android smartphones. An eSIM is an embedded digital SIM that you can use to activate your mobile plan.
This feature first appeared on some users' Pixel phones last year when they were able to move their eSIMs from their old Pixel phone to their new Pixel 8.
According to the report, Google has now enabled the ability to move your digital SIM from your existing smartphone to your Samsung Galaxy S 24 series phone, showing that the feature is being rolled out to other Pixel phones as well.
The Samsung Galaxy S 24 Ultra comes with a message asking users if they want to transfer their SIM from a different device. To do so, you’ll need to unlock your old phone and place it beside the new phone. Then, a pop-up will appear on the old phone’s screen to start the transfer.
In the same way that you need to set up an eSIM, you also need to scan the QR code to transfer your existing SIM card from your older phone to your newer Android handset.
The feature that transfers your SIM card should make it so that you don’t have to go to a nearby outlet to get it. It should be as easy as popping out your physical SIM card and putting it in your new phone.
Google first announced the ability to transfer an eSIM across devices last year during MWC 2023.
You can also convert your existing physical SIM card to an eSIM by scanning the QR code.
This feature was first spotted on Pixel 8 owners upgrading from their older Pixel phone last year, but its presence on Galaxy S24 Ultra suggests that Google is now expanding it to other OEMs.
However, the ability to transfer your current eSIM to another device is not very common at the moment. According to the Android Police report, the feature currently works only with T-Mobile’s eSIM profiles.
If you’re in a different region, such as India, you’ll have to wait for your telecom operator to support Google’s transfer feature to migrate your existing eSIM over to another Android smartphone.
